A Lazy Tuesday

Monday night all the little children went to bed with three words bouncing around in their heads, "Two hour delay!"

The children love those three words. For the younger children it means an extra two hours watching cartoons, playing with Lucky the dog, or enjoying their boxes of toys.  For the older students the words typically mean only one thing: Sleeping in.

This morning I woke at 5:43am to a surprising phone call.  No, it wasn't Pastor Dave.  He usually waits till at least 6 am to call.  Instead I glanced at my caller ID to see "Butler Public School."  This was going to be good.

"Good morning," I muttered.

"Good morning, Ken.  This is Mary Ellen from the public school.  We're closed today."

I began to cry.  Not really, but I wanted to.

"Thank you," I said.  "Thank you, Mary Ellen.  I'll name my first daughter after you."

Closed.  Closed!

Of course I could have seen the pessimistic side of things.  Being closed today meant an additional day at the end of the year, but since we follow Butler's schedule there was nothing I could do but enjoy it.

And I did.

After falling back asleep for a little while I got up and got going.  After getting a few odds and ends jobs completed I opened the blinds on my large living room window and plopped down to enjoy a long lazy day reading and writing.

Ahhh . . . the privileges of singialty (or singleness).
